Is professional scrum master exam difficult? ›

Becoming a Professional Scrum Master (PSM) requires a strong understanding of the Scrum framework and the ability to apply it in real-world scenarios. The PSM1 exam is a challenging test of an individual's knowledge and skills in Scrum.

An additional benefit, as the PSM III is quite rare, it will give a distinguishing factor on the job market. It may also raise one's credibility as a Scrum practitioner, increasing the potential impact and outcome for an organisation.

You need to score over 85% to pass and gain the PSM I certification. The assessment contains 80 questions in English of multiple choice type. You decide when and where to take the assessment. You are not required to attend an assessment centre and can take it online from a location of your choosing.

Exam Level

PSM III is difficult and less than 2000 people have achieved it to date. However it is not impossible so if you prepare well, understand the theory underpinning Scrum and have some solid real-world experience with Scrum you should be well placed to pass and achieve this distinguishing certification.

All Scrum.org assessments use the most recent version of the English Scrum Guide as the source for questions regarding the rules, artifacts, events, and roles of Scrum. However, reading the Scrum Guide alone is not enough for someone to pass a Professional Scrum Assessment.

All exam questions can be answered from the guide and the exam is open book, so it is vital that you can navigate it quickly during the exam. The advantage of the CSM is that it is easy to get. Exam Difficulty Level: The exam difficulty level falls under the moderate category, as compared to the CSM exam, there are 3 different levels, the time constraint is strict, and you have to attempt 80 questions in 60 minutes which counts to 45 seconds per question. The passing criteria is 84%.

To earn CSM certification, you must complete an online or in-person training and pass a test.
