The only daughter of Ragnar and his wife, Lagertha, Gyda died of the plague that ravaged Kattegat. Gyda also died alongside Thyri (Elinor Crawley), the daughter of Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne) and Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig). Sadly, Gyda died when Ragnar was overseas and upon his return, he had to say goodbye.

Gyda is an eleven-year-old girl who lives on a small farm in a village outside Kattegat with her father Ragnar, her mother Lagertha, and her twelve-year-old brother Björn. Gyda is hunting eels and fish with her mother in the river near their farm.

Gyda is the kind and gentle daughter of Ragnar and Lagertha two famous Viking warriors. Gyda is just starting to learn the ways of the Vikings. We first see Gyda fishing for eels with her mother.

It's unknown if Vikings' Gyda was inspired by some – perhaps lesser-known – historical or legendary figure, but the truth is that the legends of Ragnar Lothbrok establish that he had daughters, but their names and stories are unknown.

1 Ragnar Lothbrok

While many deaths in Vikings can be difficult to bear, the most heartbreaking is none other than the one suffered by the show's main protagonist, Ragnar Lothbrok. As one of the most fascinating and layered characters in television, his death leaves a massive void in the show.

Gyda Eiriksdottir of Hordaland (Gyða Eiríksdóttir) was a semi-legendary Norwegian concubine during the Viking Age. She appears in the Saga of Harald Fairhair (Harald Hårfa*gres saga) in Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla. The story is not mentioned in any other source.

Ragnar then married Aslaug, also known as Randalin, the daughter of Sigurd and Brynhildr. They had four sons, Ivar the Boneless, Ubba, Hvitserk and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye (thus called because there was a mark in his eye, as if a snake lay around the pupil).

Ragnar is away when is daughter, Gyda, dies aged 12 of the plague and is cremated together with others on the beach at Kattegat.

Upon Ragnar's return, he is furious with Aslaug when he learns his sons nearly died and Siggy did saving them. Aslaug is questioned as to why she was not caring for their sons. He is highly suspicious of her story, enough so that he even refrains from making love to her.

Ragnar Lothbrok and Lagertha shared a deep relationship that defined their entire lives. How the two met is unclear, but it is alleged that Ragnar, whilst on his way to confess his love to her, had to spear a bear and strangle a hound in order to reach her. Lagertha, impressed, agreed to marry him.

Bjorn Has A Child With Thorunn, But Ends Up With Torvi

However, everything goes wrong when she is injured in battle. Thorunn survives but is left with a large scar that changes the shape of her face. After she has their baby (Siggy), she becomes increasingly withdrawn and unhappy and shuts Bjorn out as well.

Helga adopted her, but Tanaruz had a very hard time adapting and grew very afraid of both Helga and Floki – but especially Helga. During a raid on England, Tanaruz stabbed Helga and seconds later killed herself. Not long after, Floki found her and Helga died in his arms.
