(AP) In a preliminary study at a Nashville hospital, doctors say a new heat treatment has dramatically improved the ability of radiation and drug therapy to shrink tumors in patients with advanced cancer. The treatments resulted in partial or complete shrinkage of 75 percent of tumors treated in 13 patients with cancers of the skin, breast, head and neck and other areas, the doctors said. It is too early to talk about a cure, said Dr.

Steven Stroup, who i is conducting the Park View Hospital research with Dr. Burton Grant. Only a small number of patients was treated and some of the patients had cancer elsewhere in their bodies that was not destroyed by the treatments. Studies conducted at Park View and other medical centers, however, BRISTOL HERALD COURIER The Bristol Courier, established in 1870, and the Bristol Herald, established in 1903, were consolidated February 9, 1907. 1979 suggest that hyperthermia can double the damaging effects of radiation treatments in cancer cells and increase by as much as six times the cancer-killing actions of chemotherapy, Stroup said. Hyperthermia is the heating of body tissues by ultrasound (sound waves) or by microwaves. Stroup said the high temperatures produced by hyperthermia can kill cancer cells directly. The technique also is thought to reduce the ability of tumor cells to repair damage caused by radiation, and to make the cells more permeable by anti -cancer drugs. Potentially, "this will allow us to give lower doses of radiation and Stroup said, thereby reducing the side effects of the treatments while still killing as many or more cancer cells.

Dr. Arnold Malcolm, director of radiation oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperthermia because researchers throughout the country are using different techniques to administer the heat. "The trend is definitely to demonstrate it is of benefit," he said. Malcolm said Vanderbilt Medical Center doctors began studies of hyperthermia treatment in patients in September. The Park View and Vanderbilt studies are part of a seven-center test of hyperthermia machines manufactured by Clini-Therm Corp.

of Dallas. The $100,000 devices, which have been approved for investigational studies by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, were purchased by a local group of investors, Hyperthermia Associates and leased to the two Nashville hospitals earlier this year. Stroup credited the Nashville investors with providing important financial backing for Clini-Therm to continue developing and testing its devices. "We really have some people who have stood tall in the community," he said.

Hyperthermia can burn the skin, but Clini-Therm officials said their microwave device has a cooling system to prevent burns and temperature probes to monitor heating inside tumors. In 10 of the patients, they were able to heat tumors to 108 degrees Fahrenheit the temperature needed to kill cancer cells during twice-a-week hyperthermia treatments in conjunction with radiation or chemotherapy. "Phenomenal" shrinkage and disappearance of the tumors 0C- curred in some of the patients after only four to six weeks of radiation therapy and hyperthermia treatments, Stroup said. The treatment "totally eradicated" a massive tumor on the arm of one woman within a month, he said. Unfortunately, the cancer was later found to have spread to her lungs.
